Tip of the day!

Did you know the adhesive in MOST envelopes and tea bags is made of wheat paste? I just learned that and called the manufacturer of the envelopes I use. They were very kind and indeed confirmed that envelopes are now a threat to my daily life. As for the tea, it is recommended to use loose tea or tea bags that have been stapled shut. For years I have purchased teas from Yogi Organic and I was thrilled to see they are stapled.

A Happy Mama (Day)

Today is Mother's day, well it is as I write. I probably won't get this posted until tomorrow, but whatever, TODAY is Mother's Day, it's Sunday, and in our family that means it's Doughnut Day. The joy I am experiencing from this collision of event's is palpable.

As long as my husband and I have been together, Sunday was always Doughnut Day. That came to a screeching halt when our oldest son was diagnosed. Sure, doughnuts are not exactly the healthiest thing to pump into your children, but for us it was more about the tradition of getting up, going out early, completely disheveled in such a way, your whole appearance says, "Yay!It's Sunday morning and we're gonna eat some doughnuts (or crepes or cinnamon rolls or chocolate croissants)!" And, yes we still call it Doughnut Day even if we don't actually choose doughnuts. I don't know why.

Anyhow, upon diagnosis, I had turned to my husband and said, "I can alter the crepes and make them at home, but what do we do about the DOUGHNUTS???!! I was, indeed, very dramatic and searched his face for the usual look of amusement, but I found no evidence of a smiling cracking or an eye rolling. Equally serious and shaken he replied, " We HAVE to figure out something!"

In retrospect I can't help but be amused by our unusual priorities, but no one wants their routines altered. Not even in a doughnut sized way.

So a search began. Anything involving gluten free doughnuts was read and noted. Recipes, shops, reviews, and in store products, we just couldn't get enough information!

My husband came across information regarding a place called
Spudnuts. I don't know if they're actually gluten free, but they are made with potato flour and that was a good start. There aren't many locations left anymore and our nearest was 220 miles. That was not going to work. Then I found Holy Donuts. They're located in Eugene, Or which meant that wasn't going to work either, but we DO drive down to Southern Oregon regularly. I can't tell you how much I want to try this place. I'm thinking a future post will be necessary once we give 'em a try.

It was during a trip to Whole Foods, something caught my eye. On the bottom shelf in an end cap freezer, turned sideways..... Donuts!!! They are made by
Kinnikinnick Foods, a GF company out of Canada and simply fantastic. Spendy, but fantastic. According to their website, their donuts have gone national at Whole Foods, but they are available online, as well.

As you can see from the package they are more than gluten free. These babies are also dairy, soy, nut, wheat, and potato free. I especially like this because our youngest son has a milk allergy, making it possible to clog his arteries without allergic reaction.

Good grief! That was a terrible thing to say, my apologies.

They are extremely dense. Small yet fulfilling. You probably can't tell from these pictures, but they're about 3-4 inches in diameter and I'd say 2-3 inches thick.
So far we've had the chocolate and vanilla. Looking forward to trying the other two flavors, maple and cinnamon sugar.

My sons only complaint is that they don't have sprinkles. That's been easily remedied by buying our own and decorating. We continue our search for a local shop to enter, but for now we are happy with heading out to Whole Foods on Sunday's. Crazy appearance and all! The small size and high cost (about $6 for 6 donuts)has forced us to accompany our doughnuts with something of substance.I'm thinking that's not such bad idea anyhow.

Welcome

Welcome, I'm so happy you're here! My name is Summer, I'm a regular gal with fantastic kiddo's and a loving husband. My only difference(if you can call it that) is that my family and I live with Celiac Disease, OK and a side of MS. Yes I said "side of" and there will be more on that later...especially since I'm hoping that side order will be 86ed here shortly.

In short, this blog is about our journey into and through Celiac, together. In addition I hope it sheds light on me as a person and reveals my growing passion of improving the lives of all who stand on the sidelines of a gluten filled world.

If I can convey one thing in this first post, it's this:

I do not feel hindered by this diagnosis, in fact I've been freed.

This new journey is the best part, for me. I see it as a great adventure into food, health, healing and joy. I've had more than a few people say to me, "It must be miserable to LIVE that way." All I can think is how miserable I was dying the other way.

I make great efforts to make it fun and exciting for my kids, all the while composing their assimilation one snack and birthday party at a time. Adventure aside, I can't deny our experiences will be forever different. So this blog is for them as much as it is for me.

And that is why I look forward enthusiastically, knowing now that the aches and pains (literally) are behind us. With that being said, I can't wait to share products, taste tests, recipes and more!

Thank you for stopping in and entering our gluten free life!
